Fort Worth lost a police officer today

Sgt. Billy Randolph, a 30 year veteran of FWPD was supervising a crash investigation that closed down I-35 this morning. Someone drove around a temporary barricade and through the accident scene and ran over Sgt Randolph. He was transported to the hospital but did not survive his injuries. Suspect is in custody. What an absolutely senseless tragedy.

You do something so dangerous for 30 years and then something like that takes you out. Dang sad. Prayers for his family.

RIP. I still work patrol as a supervisor after 22 years in LE this month. IH-35 runs through the middle of our city. I hate collisions or anything having to do with roadways, but I genuinely despise being anywhere near the highway or toll road. Had a long-time coworker killed 5 or so years back on an accident scene on IH-35 by an idiot under the influence who drove through cones/flares/cops trying to stop him. The idiots and drunks out on the roadway would absolutely STUN the average person if they had any idea of the stuff we see out on the road. We don't play anymore, my guys have all been instructed to get FD with an engine on any collision or other event on or near a high-speed roadway, day or night. I'd rather a drunk run into the engine blocking for us than see another of my guys killed.

I'm retired FWFD and hated freeways more than anything on the job. 18 wheelers on 287 would go by so fast the fire engine would rock and they could care less about the slow down law and all the people flying down the roads not paying attention and hit a big fire truck with lights flashing......

It's bad enough at any time, but it's especially horrible to have 30 years in then go that way. Prayers for his family, friends and department.

Such a tragedy ! It’s no surprise the way people drive. I’m sure people who live/work in metro areas are somewhat used to it, but to be honest, it’s scary every time I’m driving in a big city. Everybody drives too fast and follows too close. Prayers for the family of the deceased and all the officers who are under appreciated every day.

My son is an LEO - hate to hear news like this. And now there is so much hate directed at these men and women who do their best to protect us.

Senseless tragedy….is no more apt a description. That officer will never go home to his loved ones all because someone was in a hurry, looking for a shortcut.

                          Tragic, indeed.
