I do it all the time researching local hometeading land grants in Montana. Click on the 2 boxes under "Maps", and a modern-day map with the outlines of the land grant will appear below. You may have to zoom in to see where it is.

Try it and see if that works.

I don't see anything in that section township and range that is 160 acres. Do you have an owner name? Thomas Freeman?

160 makes sense as it is two half quarter sections. Each of those is 1/8th of a section, which is 80 acres.

          General location (large scale): https://www.google.com/maps/place/64...0572?entry=ttu

            Williams, Austin H

When I click the two squares it doesn’t do anything, does it take a particular browser ?

How would I get a map with the outlined boundaries ?

BLM told me to take my original grant with a certified copy and go get the title search done then get a lawyer to take it to district court with documents supporting him as my Great Great Grandfather.

            Thanks

The GLO website did not show a map when I clicked. I tried to see the deed/ patent, and it would not load. Here's a picture of where the land is located from another website.

What are you trying to do? Is the land still in your family? In Montana, I go to the county recorder office and they let me search for free for historic research.

The info y’all are giving me seems very close, I’ll tell you why. The property is supposedly within walking distance of Etha Baptist Church which my Great Great Grandfather donated and was a Reverend at. This location y’all give me is right there ! My Great Great Grandfather (grantee) along with the other heirs are buried at the nearby Cemetery. The last person to occupy the land was my Great grandmother and her husband in the early 1930’s and she move away until her death. The land was supposedly never sold or willed. I don’t know how taxes or back taxes play into it is why I’m gonna pay for title search in the said county.

My goal would be to put the issue to rest for other family members, either it still belongs to the heirs “forever” as it states in the grant, or it doesn’t.

I should be within yards of the eastern boundary of the land grant. It’s the western 1/4 of the 640 acre section #36.

If It was granted to him, his heirs and assignees – however, if they were taxes due on it, and nobody . there paid them, it would’ve been taken by court action and a Sheriff’s sale.

For your purposes, you do not need to pay a title company to do a title search, and I really doubt that the county recorders office will do a title search for you.

What I would do is go to the county recorders office with what you have, and tell them you want to see if that land was ever sold. It’ll either be in their electronic system, or you might need to go through their big books, recording deeds, and transfer properties. I assume it’s done the same way in Alabama as it is in Montana.

Good luck, let me know what you find.

I was just gonna pay a local title company over there but like your idea better. I know the land was never sold by the family but don’t know the possible loss from taxes.

Does that map have a sat view with boundary lines? I couldn’t imagine someone building anything of significance if they didn’t own it.

Also, what does the part at BLM site that says “Canceled-No” mean ?

And, the lady on the phone at BLM said it was “open”, what does that mean ?
