One of those bucks was found dead on the river in January. One was a 7 pt. cull that was shot this past weekend. Not one sign of the other three or four since cameras were put out in August. Seems really weird, not to mention somewhat depressing. Ugh.

Congrats Colt & Pineywoods on your buck deerz!
We also got a bunch of moisture the past two weekends. The oats and wheat were up 1-3 -inches tall last weekend. So as our baseball guys would say. It should look like Wrigley Field this weekend.
I think the rut might be full tilt this coming week. It's early but, they were moderately chasing and the bucks were displaced from where they normally are. They were cruzin around for sure. Saw 3-4 new dudes.
Mike, Its hard to tell which ones are which on a bunch of our deer from year to year. However, a couple of our bigger deer we let walk last year showed back up and caught some Easton fever the first couple of weeks. They both made significant jumps this year. Worth the wait.
Good luck to everyone during the rut!

So, the season is all but over. What a season. Here's one MONT hunters season recap.
At the end of last season our group had what we felt like were five good bucks that would be 'mature' this year, and we looked forward to hunting. We found one of those dead on the banks of the Red River, about 40 yards from one of our tripods. No idea what happened to him. But i took the head and bleached the skull and he's now on display in our cabin. So we now had four bucks we were looking forward to hunting this season. We had good spring rains, relatively mild summer, etc. Conditions were right for an epic season. Then, just a deer season began, we had an epic rain. The Red River got to the second highest level i've seen it in the ten years we've been hunting up there. We think maybe some der basically got trapped on the Oklahoma side of the river. Many deer eat on the Texas side of the river, and sleep on the Oklahoma side. Anyway, as of today, we do not / have not had ONE single picture of any of the four bucks. No clue what has happened to them. The season included watching stocker calves chase deer into the woods one evening. Watching a Great Horned Owl catch a gopher one evening, watching a Bald Eagle hunt a field one morning, and a few times just watching quail be quail. All really cool experiences (except for those stinking calves).
On opening weekend of rifle season my lease mate shot a really nice 5 or 6 y.o. 7 pt. Probably scores about 140 / 145. Heavy horned, long tines. I didn't get to hunt much. When i did hunt i didn't see many animals. I believe the mild weather and green grass had the deer eating at their leisure all night long, and laying up all day. Very little activity at feeders. I hunted, switched to rifle, from 12/27 through last night. We finally had a little cold snap, and some bucks started moving. Out of the blue we got on set of trail camera pics of a nice mature deer on one of our pastures. He became my target.
So it started hunting this one pasture most evenings. Over the last few days i noticed that more and better bucks were coming out. So last night i went. At about 5:00 some pigs came out. I made a really sweet ear hole shot and dropped the biggest sow in her tracks. Within one minute a group of bob white quail were eating the grain i had put out for the pigs. Little quail walking around the head of dead pig eating is pretty humorous. So, i just let the pig lay, and waited. Around 5:20 a crew of four small bucks came in and went straight to the feed pen. Nice! Optimism is high. So i'm watching tree line where the deer typically come from. Nothing yet. I look back at the feed pen, and there is a huge 8 pt, 3 y.o. This deer will be really special if he makes it another couple of years. We'll see. Now i'm really optimistic. Maybe the next one will be the one. Sure enough, about one minute later the target bucks come strolling in. Walking hard to the feed pen. I don't want him to get in there. So as soon as he stops, i fire. He bucks up like a big mule deer or elk sometimes do on the tv hunting shows. Then he starts staggering, quickly staggering, back to where he came from, and the fence line. The neighbor is not really cooperative about retrieving animals. I DO NOT want him near that fence. I was 99% sure he was about to keel over, but the tough old buck just wouldn't go down. So, much to my chagrin, i put another round into him. Down he went. So a really good deer and a pig removed in one evening. Combined with killing a couple of does earlier in the week, season salvaged. Looking forward to the highs and lows of next season. Hope all you boys had a good season.
