    Remote key fobs for vehicles

Are the ones you can buy online able to function as normal?

Or do you have to go to a dealership and pay $$Big Bucks$$ for one of theirs?

Asking for a frend. I have never lost one myself!!

I’ve bought a few different ones online and they’ve worked. One for a 2003 Silverado which is easy to program, one for the 2014 Explorer we bought for our daughter from Stan R and one for our old 2016 Ram half ton.

The one for the Ram had to be programmed by a locksmith but it worked fine. The other two I set up myself.

All that I know for sure is that VW keys have to be ordered from the dealer because the part of the programming that works with the ECM is done before it arrives at the dealership. The door functions are programmed at the dealership with the car in house. They are really paranoid about key fob programming confidentiality. I now own a Volkswagen key that will unlock the doors at a cost of about $250. It will even start the engine and it will run for maybe two seconds before the engine is disabled. I did buy a used key fob for my Tundra and the dealership was able to program it.

It is to the point where I won't buy a used vehicle that doesn't come with two working keys.

I bought a 2 pack for my 2012 f350 off amazon for $25. I had to have a locksmith cut and program them at $40 for both. They work but sometimes the autostart will start the truck just from hitting the lock button. When it does I have to unlock the truck, put the key in the ignition and turn it on and off to kill it. It's a pain but for $65 and 2 keys, I'll live with it

I just used the Dorman key fob and programmer. Was easy and works. Need programmer for newer vehicles. Check out their site. Will tell you what you need.
