I have an idea for a product but don't know where to start. I've researched until my eyes crossed and the conflicting info on the process is overwhelming. Has anyone done this before that can point me in the right direction? Maybe some do's and don'ts ?

Go talk to a reputable patent attorney. Long story short...I did and they told me they could get me a patent if I really wanted one. They also told me to save my money and forget the patent, produce my product and get out there and corner the market on it. People want to buy the original product, not the cheap copycat knock-offs. I'm glad I didn't write them a check that day.

Unless you have deep pockets I wouldn't do it. My quadriplegic neighbor invented and patented some wheelchair devices. Another big company found out about his inventions and made the same items. He had his lawyer try to stop them and they said sue us. He didn't have deep pockets so he had to let it go.

Ask yourself….. why?
-Are you planning to take the patented concept to a marketable product to sell? If hardware, figure in addition to patent costs a half million dollars from design to prototype to design for manufacturing to ramping production. I sold product development services before retiring.
- Are you planning to license it to another company so they can productize it and you collect royalties?
I worked with multiple inventors when I was working. PM me phone # and I'd be happy to tell you what I learned.
