    Fawn recruitment

Been wondering how this rain is helping the fawns and mommas. I know it helps but how much? Training for an elk hunt so I have a 2.5 mile trek to train. I counted 15 fawns live and 1 dead. Car hit it. I’m sure there are a lot of other factors but around here this year it is a fawn explosion

I counted 19 fawns the other morning on my walk through the neighborhood here in San Antonio. I usually walk in McAlester park every morning and see up to 50-60 deer every morning but I was really surprised by the amount of fawns I saw in the neighborhood. I have seen two sets of quads so far this year. Seems like it has been a great year for them with the rain and cover and browse.

I have 9 to 10 does everyday and had only had 3 fawns show up. But, yesterday there were 6.

For our place in S. Texas the rain is huge. not only from a food & cover standpoint but it keeps the temps lower. A lot of fawns die from dehydration and this weather is definitely working to help them. We have a few on the ground now but a bunch more to come.

Central hill country had a bangin' crop. No real winter to speak of last year but the does went into it in great shape. Had good rains all the way through and waist high broomweed when they hatched = spots errywhere.

We needed it after a few tough years.

If a fawn is born on a rainy day atleast 1 inch rainfall I’d say 70-80% die. Anyhow it’s a great year for fawns with the cloudy cooler temps and heavy cover.

In our neighborhood we have seen more twin fawns than years past.

                  This ^^^

Im not sure how constant rain and storms help fawns at all. IMO a normal season with occasional rain to keep vegetation growing is better.
