Funny, I’ve never heard them called Blue Dog Democrats. Maybe an east vs west thing? I don’t know.

I believe Yellow Dog Democrats were typically southern, rural democrats. Not sure what Yankee dems were called.

That’s because there were no blue Democrats until recent history.

Blue dogs are roughly the Democrat equivalent of a RINO for Republicans. There were plenty of blue dogs in my area around Beaumont with its heavily union chemicals plants and refineries. To get elected to Office, you had to run as a Democrat because the union dominated the elections. They were conservative in opinion, but Democrat in party. That’s a blue dog. Today many of them have simply swapped to the Republican Party, mostly as the unions have lost their grip.

A yellow dog was/is a person who will not ever vote for a Republican as in, I would vote for a yellow dog before I would vote Republican.
