When somebody asks you what day of the week it is…..and you don’t know…..you will have fully embraced retirement ! Congrats Russ, it’s awesome ! (Except your income is drastically reduced and you will still wake up early, but there will be no place to go)
My wife is a little worried about the income thing. I probably didn't put enough into my 401k when I was younger, but I got what I got. My wife and I have been together for close to 20 years, married for a little over 13 of them. She made the comment that she never thought this day would ever come, ever since she has known me I have been working and she said she just figured I would just work until I die. I told her that if I thought I would work all my life I wouldn't have put a dime in 401k, took home half again what I take home every two weeks, and been on a south Texas lease since that would be the only way I could afford it. Her biggest concern seems to be that she thinks I will die within a year of retiring- her ex and a good friend did. I told her not to worry about the first year, but by the second year I should be caught up with all the stuff I need to get done and then she can worry... Work has been interfering with the stuff I want to get done, so starting the 16th I get started on that stuff.
Congratulations Russ!! I also highly recommend it if you can do it!! Since I retired, both wife and I are so busy, I don't know how in the world we ever had time to go to work!! We are literally having a ball every day! We never get "DONE"! We just quit and rest up a bit, then get at it again! Every day is Saturday except Sunday... Many times we have to look at our phones to know for sure which day of the week it is... "If I don't get it done today, I'll finish it up Saturday!!" The stress, tension and anxiety level of both our lives have just melted away... I ran my own business 24/7 and she was an O.R. Trauma center nurse for the past 15 years, 30 years before that, just O.R., mostly orthopedics, but still, every case is a potential life and death or at minimum life altering situation... That kind of pressure grows on a person after a while... We have fallen in love all over again is probably the best part about the whole retirement deal... EVERY night is date night!!
I hope the Lord gives you and your bride many, many years to enjoy the best part of life so far!

One week from tomorrow I will be officially retired. After 37+ years at one place it is time to hang it up. Although I have worked for three different companies (thru buyouts) I have been at the same place longer than probably 75% of the employees there have been alive. The wife is a little apprehensive about the change in our lives, but I am ready to not having to answer to anyone but the wife. No more being on call every other weekend requiring me to stay close to home and getting calls at any time day or night. The most important part is that starting in October every morning starts another day of hunting. And no more having to squeeze what needs to be taken care of both at home and the leases into two days of the week. Woohoo! Another benefit of being retired....old man naps in the afternoon,,,,
