    Will a severe drought effect nut production the following year? My chestnut trees are empty this year. Trees look healthy, just not bearing any nuts.

    Yes, you’ll see a much larger mast production approximately 2 years after an environmental stress event. So, next year you’ll most likely have abnormally high production.

      To add, you may still see late mast production but the trees are putting more of their energy into recovery of lost leaf surface area and/or branches that may have died off from the drought. These “energy reserves” are what enables trees to survive environmental stresses and extremes.
