My son played travel baseball with a kid from when they were 8 until just last month (they're 13 now). Our group of parents are pretty cool and we all hang out at tournaments, and go for dinner/beers after, even travel and camp together some. 5 or 6 of us dads, including this guy, hunted cranes together for a couple days last year. Anyway, this kids dad called me Darrell from the very beginning. Every practice, every game, he'd say hello and call me Darrell. His son and his wife called me Dale. We even have a groupme chat for the coach to send out info to the team, and I'm on there pretty regularly telling everyone where we're going to eat/drink, and my name is on there clear as day. It even says "Brady's Dad" next to it. It never bothered me a bit, and he's a super nice guy so I didn't want to embarrass him at first, then a couple of the other dads caught onto it and it was a running joke. This went on for over 4 years, and I started to think the joke was on me. I thought maybe this guy was playing the long game somehow, and was really dedicated to this joke that I didn't yet get...but I was impressed and let it go on.
I guess back about March he went home and told his wife "Darrell said they'll be taking their camper to ______ and we should come by after baseball for some beers and the kids can jump in the lake"....she of course was very confused until they figured it out, and told him my name was Dale. He apologized 100 times the next time I saw him, but then she started calling me Darrell, so he just kept on.

I meet people fairly often that say HI and we talk a while and I don't recognize. Sometimes something that's said will trigger my memory and sometimes I have to ask, Who are you? They have always been someone in my past. People I've worked with, girls and parents of girls who my daughter played softball with for the most part. Almost always 20+ yrs since I've seen them. People can age a lot in 20 yrs. I'm sure I have.

Always an awkward situation. I come out of a store and a guy around my age fast walks right over to me, shakes my hand, and calls me by name. Starts asking how everyone (by name) is doing. Goes on to ask if we still hang out on the weekends in the same area (and he names it). Guy clearly knows me and I'm the person he thinks I am. I would bet everything I own I've never met this guy in my life and to this day have no idea who he was. Sometimes I'm not great with names because I have a habit of giving everyone a nickname, but I remember faces really well.
This was around 10 years out of high school so not long enough for someone to change all that much.
