Dave, I assumed you had already looked at the tax records your folks have in their possesion.

To answer your original question...yes you will have to pay any back, UNPAID taxes on the property you inherit. The taxes will not go away. They will have to eventually be paid by someone or the property will be sold on the courthouse steps by the sheriff in order to collect the taxes.

The tax collectors really are not money grubbers. They are just doing their job of collecting the taxes that your elected officials approved to pay for roads, schools, and other infrastruture.

They are not delinquent on any taxes. They are under an exemption. I'm just not sure which exemption it is. My Dad told me it was a senior citizen exemption. I just have to look for myself.
As for the comment about tax collectors, I should have said "county politicians." I agree that tax collectors are not the bad guys here, they're just doing the job.

If they have been paying zero taxes, you may have bigger problems than just paying back taxes. Get it checked out immediately.
