Frio River Floatable?

Just got home. It’s flowing but barely. Not even close to floatable. That being said our group had one of the best times we have had in 12 years of going. We stay at 7 bluffs and the deep side of the road is where we hung out. We rented kayaks for the kids and we all went a good ways up river and found an amazing little area to hang out away from the crowds that was clean, cold, had a good rope swing, tons of fish, and both deep water for those going on the swing and shallow for the younger kiddos.

But also (I'm no Frio expert) I'd assume it has just as much to do with the numbers of new homes and ranches along the Frio. The more roads, buildings, sheds = more fast runoff and less springs.

Yes, there are stagnant sections that get a little nasty with algae and silt when there hasn’t been a significant flood, but to straight label it as toilet water like you described is ignorant. Concan “can” get a lot of debris from upstream users, but most areas are great to just pop a squat and sit in the cool water. We’re going this month and I’ll be sure to post some pics of the water 👍

Just got back. We floated one of our normal routes and although we had to walk some and pull some tubes, it was very enjoyable and all the kids had a great time. There were still plenty of springs cooling off the sections we were at (North of Garner). Caught quite a few fish on the fly rod and ultralight spinning outfits. Headed over to Camp Wood yesterday and spent half the day there at Quince Springs. Still beats the heck out of being anywhere around Houston!

👍. I’m sure the Junipers have some significant contribution to the aquifers not being able to recharge. There has to be some other contributing factors as well. If you go to Leakey and head East on 337, before you get to The Frio River, you pass “Leakey Springs” where The City of Leakey gets its water. This spring has remained relatively constant even during very dry years and it feeds the Frio just South of Frio Pecan Farm. How is it that this spring hasn’t gone completely dry and still provides substantial amounts of water above ground? The water out of this spring is COLD 🥶👍
