    Select baseball bat question

    My son is 11 and has been using a team mates hype fire -8. I want to get him a bat, but not the fire. He likes the balanced composite bats.

    Thinking of going with the Rawlings Icon.

    Any of ya'll used it, have horror stories or great things to say about it? Its a lot of coin to drop for a bat, just want to make sure we are not disappointed. Just so he has some interest in this purchase we are going in halves on it.

            The load depends on the model. The Cat-X composite is a balanced bat, the Cat-X Connect and aluminum Cat-X are endloaded.

              The Easton Encore Hybrid (black and blue one) is what you are looking for, especially if he's been swinging the hype fire. It's the next best thing after the hype fire, and it's more durable. Fire is working its way out, one organization has already cancelled them, and the others I'm sure wont be far behind it.

                My 10u (playing 11u) son has the white Rawlings Icon USSSA bat. He's swinging the -10 version though. I was pretty protective of anyone else using it for a while, but now several of his teammates are hitting with it too. It's held up well so far.

                  Im a 13/14u baseball coach. Most of my boys like the Maruccis (CATx and the different variations) and the Hype Fire. We dont have any Rawlings Icon users on my team. And yes the Hype Fire is being banned in some organizations.

                  I always tell my boys to get the bat they feel most comfortable with and save the extra money for lessons or additional practice outside of regular practice.

                      Keep in mind, select baseball is a business! There is a big business of selling boys/families gear they dont necessarily need, e.g. a sliding mitt at this age.

                        Our 12u team had 2 different pitchers throw perfect games this weekend. All the hype fires, icons, cat x's the other teams had didn't make any difference. Pitching and defense wins games at this age. One of our better hitters uses an old Easton that is all beat up. Our worst batter has the latest and greatest Meta, I think. My son bought his own Cat 9 on sale this year and it's no better than the used Posey he got a few years ago. It really doesn't matter. If you square it up, the ball will go.

                            100% true, but that kid at the plate has to have confidence in what he is using, the kid with the old beat up bat knows he can hit with it!

                              I do not know much about the youth version of the Icon, but I have a lot of high school and college customers swinging the BBCOR version.
