Remember the Kudu I took back in Nov 2021? Well after a long 2.5 yrs the mount came home today. You would think after taking a once in a lifetime animal, doing the homework for a great taxidermist, checking all the boxes off and confirming that all would be taken care of an amazing piece would be in return. Well unfortunately that’s not the case.
My bull had an amazing cape and a very unique 3rd horn growth on the forehead. Slick gray hide as soft as a puppy. Very unique markings all throughout. I chose a taxidermist that was highly recommended. Didn’t want to go with a sweat shop type place and wanted to stick with an individual artist who did it all. From tanning, to fleshing and every detail done by 1 individual.
Turns out I was let down. Cape was sent off to an individual in Houston and never returned. I’m sure the value of the hide was up there. Not often a green hide from Texas let alone the states comes through a tannery. Many kudu hides are shipped salted from Africa as stiff as can be and although make decent mounts the green hides done here make top of the line pieces.
Story is a kudu hide was shipped in return and supposedly not noticed by the taxidermist. When he went to mount it the stretching process was difficult, cuts and repairs didn’t seem right but did I get a call? Nope. Received a text the mount was done and drying process started. Detailed finishes would be done and then he’d be ready for pick up. I was pretty excited after the 26 months of waiting. Pics come through and I immediately knew it wasn’t my bull.
I can drag this on and on but I doubt it really gets me anywhere. Sure would love to know what happened to my original cape. Was it traded due to value? Damaged during process? Stolen? Mixed up in the wrong batch? Who knows. Be a miracle but if anyone comes across one that looks like it in a showroom or for sale please let me know.
