I posted last week I had picked up my new Deutsch Drahthaar from the breeder. All was going great, she had acclimated well to the family, learning sit, and crate training well, she’s actually the chillest pup I’ve ever had.
yesterday morning my wife went to get her out of the crate let her out to pee, and she had a slight limp. I had taken her to a big open space the day before and figured she had a sticker or something or later that day I took her to get the kids at school and we got a bit tangled up in the leash and I bumped her with my foot.
but as the day progressed she declined from a slight limp to a significant limp. This morning she was very lethargic and would barely move and yelped anytime I picked up to go potty.
i already had a vet appt today for her next round of vaccines. That was deferred as we focused on the immediate. I was terrified I had broken her leg when we got tangled in the leash.
but upon examination she was running 104 fever, clearly tender to the touch on her front right leg, but also around her jaws. All classic HOD symptoms. And no signs of fracture.
researching it indicates they grow out of it once the growth plates close, but she will likely have relapses up until about 2 yrs.
he gave her a shot of prednisone and another steroid to be administered over the next 15 days.
