    Skinning rack

I am going to be making a skinning rack(for next year). I would like to see some pics of some that y'all have. Also, what is a good height for the rack?

Get you and electric winch on the top. Best part of ours.

I have one I modified from an "A" frame hoist. Don't a picture handy, but will take one tomorrow and post it. It has a winch on both ends of it, with 2 horizontal bars... one to hoist with and a lower one to hang the deer/hog on hooks to skin/cut on.

I built one this year. It is with 4 x 9' pipes, 4' cross braces and a 14' center pipe. Basically your A frame, modified swing set design. total co$t < 100 bucks I am looking at adding brake winches to each leg. I have had up to three deer hanging/cleaning at once. It will hold 4.

Seems like I used a scale on the Bar X a while back.
You guys had a great skinning rack.

My biggest concern is the height. I am not for sure how high to go. I remember seeing a bunch of good racks on here before, but it might have been before the crash. Just hoping to see some pics and get some good ideas.

You want something semi-permenant or receiver hitch model? I have a receiver hitch one I can bring this weekend if you want to look.

Bring it so I can take a look at it. I am not for sure what I am going to want yet. I just know that we need one. Well, maybe not...we haven't had anything to skin yet.

I always want mine as tall as possible. A high rack allows you to raise the deer up where you can work on the front shoulders and head at eye level instead of bending down. If you don't want your deer that high, you don't have to raise it that high. I also like mine high because occasionally I like to let a deer hang over night if the weather cooperates. I like to keep the deer high enough where I don't have to worry about coyotes, etc. I guess my rule of thumb is with a high rack you can still go as low as you want, with a low rack you can't go as high as you want. I would say at least 10 feet if you can.

Maybe you can use your neighbors skinning rack ??

If you make it sturdy enough and either heavy or sunk into the ground well, you can pull the hides off with a pickup. That beats the HECK out of skinning with a knife, if you're not worried about tanning the hide. Pulling with a pickup usually tears the tail up, but nothing else. You could split the tail and skin it out first, I guess.

We have a nice tall tower blind rigged with a block and tackle (no electricity nearby for a winch). It's a good spot for pulling hides. The only thing that would make it better would be a pully for the rope that was directly underneath the deer. We are thinking about sinking a pipe in the ground there to attach a pulley to. Then, the deer wouldn't swing out when pulling the hide. It would just pull the hide straight down.

I don't have any pics, but in case somebody doesn't know what I'm talking about.... You hang the deer by the head. Cut the hide around the neck and all four legs. Split the hide up the stomach and split all the legs. Skin the legs back to the body. Skin enough of the neck down to allow a round rock (about tennis ball size or so) to be laid in the hair side. Wrap the neck hide around the rock and tie a loop tight around it from the hide side. (rope slips worse if you tie it on the hair side) Tie the other end of the rope to the bumper of your pickup and drive off. It pulls the hide right off. VERY easy.
