    Guadelupe Bass

Spent three hours yesterday bank fishing on the Llano River. Those Guadelupe bass (the state fish of Texas) are small, but they have really bright yellow eyes. Catching and releasing.

Looks like a great trip. Creek and River fishing for bass is one of my favorite things to do!

Looks like an awesome trip! Is there an easy and sure fire way to id Guadalupe bass versus regular black bass?? I once fished the Guadalupe river in the Kerrville area but not sure if what I caught were Guadalupe bass or not.

They fight hard for their size.

The hinge of the mouth is behind the eye on LMB and Guads, spotted and smallmouth, the hinge is in front of the eye. LMB will have a lateral line down the midsection of their body, although it can be very faint on some fish. Guads are a good fight like smallies and taste really good if you catch some bigger ones. Travis is full of them...

i think what the OP actually caught was spotted. The hinge is in front of the eye and I believe spotted bass have bright eyes, not guads.

I read that TPWD has stocked the Llano River with Guadelupe bass, that they were once considered a threatened species, and that Guads prefer the edges of swift moving waters, which was where I caught these. I'm no expert, but I know they are not largemouth. Maybe by next year, they will have grown bigger. They loved the Berkely Tequila Sunrise power worms.

im certainly no expert, but based on this tpwd image, I think that may be a spotted bass
