    When to split firewood?

I have a water oak that died over the summer. Perfect straight one. I fell it and limbed it last week. It landed so that almost the entire tree is off the ground. Ill be splitting by hand where it fell. Easier to buck and split now or let it dry some where it sits?

I would cut it in lengths, turn it up on end, and split after it dried awhile. You can do that now or wait a couple months if it’s off the ground.

I prefer to split green or asap. Oak takes a long time to dry anyway so I'd rather get it split and let the easier seasoning of the smaller pieces begin

never let oak dry to long before you split it, longer it drys the more it earns the name 'iron wood"

That’s right cut it to the lengths you want and split it. Have fun.

Since it’s already dead, it won’t matter much other than the longer you wait, the harder it will be to split. I prefer green wood and buck n split right away.
