    Any Bi-Lingual in German?

I travel quite often to Germany for my job. I'm finding myself in need of trying to learn at least some basic conversational skills in German just to navigate. So far, most Germans I encounter are fluent enough in English that I can get around okay. I know Texas has some German influence in the Fredricksburg and Schulenburg area and I understand there are still some fluent or speak Texas Deutsch at least for some of the older generation. Anyone tried learning German or in general other language at an older age? I'm finding the German language is quite complex with all the gender order and declensions. Curious for those that achieved some level of fluency or understanding of another language what it took? I know there are tons of language learning apps, and various resources on-line available. Just wondering if anyone has been successful what was the best approach or strategy. I'm doing good to succeed in English

Continued education or adult learning at a community college should work. I kept my Spanish up to speed with that in Houston.

Many years ago I was conversant in German, but I wouldn’t say I was fluent, I learned some Texas Deutsch from my grandparents, then took it in high school and college (25 years ago). Last year, though, I went back to Germany. It was pretty rough at first, but after a week some of it started coming back. Common written vocabulary was fairly easy but trying to pick up on spoken language was a lot harder.

When we got back, I swore I was going to download Babel or Duo Lingo and try to shake the rust off. Naturally, I got busy and that hasn’t happened. Still, I think if I just downloaded an app and listened to it in the car, I’d remember enough to scrape by.

Say HI translate app- you can put in your own phrases and see or hear it in German or other languages. For me it was a little easier to pick up whatever I was trying to learn or a quick backup tool

I can say “Come here Miss, with your drawers in your hand” if that helps Daron. I learned that from my BIL when I was about 15 and I’ve never had occasion to use it. Just trying to be neighborly……..

What's crazy to me is many Germans I have met are fluent in like 3-4 languages. It seems they know the language of all their neighboring countries. We have one colleague that speaks Spanish, French, Dutch, German, English

I can get around town but I can’t just carry on a conversation but I grew up speaking German from our housekeeper when we lived in Germany. It was during my formative years of learning to speak. I have forgotten almost all that I learned as a kind.

Geezy I figured you would chime in on this. I can certainly see if you don't use it often it could easily be forgotten. I was told once that over 70 languages are spoken in Houston Tx that's how diverse Houston is
