Buying hog/cattle panels? How many ?

After dealing with far to many pigs this year, I've come to the conclusion that feeder pens are a must for the place I hunt. I'm kicking myself for not doing this before. Oh well.

Best/cheapest place to buy the 16' panels? How many per pen? I need enough for two. I'm guessing 8/per minimum. Thoughts? If you have any cost saving advice, I'll take that as well.

Stick with the Hog panels. If you buy the 60" panels and cut them in half (as others will suggest) the 6x6 squares won't stop small pigs from getting in. I've never had any baby pigs get thru the hog panels.

10 panels is almost perfect unless you've gonna have more the 1 feeder in the pen. The bigger the better

9+ panels of the 34" variety. Round pen. A t-post every 8'.

go with 12 or more pane for a pen or the bigger bucks will stay away. hog panels work fine but if you have cows too, they are useless

10 will give you roughly 50 ft diameter. I would not do smaller than that.

I think our smallest pen is 13 panels, and I wish it was bigger.

Mimimum of 12 hog panels. Check with Gebos, Tractor Supply and any farm/ranch store.

I’m running 8-10 8’ panels per feeder with no problems with size. Supported every 8’ with a t-post.

One is hog panel with large 2 row notches cut where I want them to access the pen.

The other is cut in half cattle panels.

I am going to upgrade the cut in half cattle panels this year due to the piglets getting in and it isn’t as ‘strong’ as the hog panel. Big boars can really push the cattle panel all over. If they have the hog panel, it’s not as evident.

I have been lucky and bought some used panels in the past
Worth traveling a few miles for at new prices.
Never had a buck afraid to get in a 8 panel pen.
I built my last pen as an octagon and made it easy to run a strand of barbed wire along the top in case you have hungry cows.

I’ve used the panels from tractor supply and they are great, however I recently built a pen with this jobsite fencing and was pretty impressed with how it’s held up. The black wrap comes off easy. I used half t post in between full length runs to stiffen it up. Coat was a bit less than hog panels.

20 of the 16’ panels make a 100’ diameter pen. We have 7 of them on our place and they have worked great at keeping the pigs out.

On a side note, a Lamco 600 lb low and throw feeder placed in the center of the 100’ diameter pen distributes 99.9% of the corn evenly just inside the pen.

So even if the hogs go to the feed pen, all of the corn is inside and out of reach. So they don’t mess around the feed pens.

As far as time savings, get you some stainless steel zip ties and the zip tie tool that goes with them to secure your panels. Much faster than tying wire, plenty secure, and saves a lot of wear and tear on your hands. Game changer on feeder pen construction .

You can get the hog panels at Tractor Supply. 10-12 is way plenty unless you want to spend $500 on a pen.

I build several with cattle panels cut in half recommended by aTm…. They are full of hogs daily. Any and all sizes.


hog panel only. I would even waste the time and money smaller than 10 panel. It’s insane how much a little increase in area increases usage. That’s for East Texas. If I was west or south with higher deer population I’d probably go 12 panel minimum
