My son Gus was drawn for this hunt. Got home about 6 last night. Fun trip with him. Was a tough hunt this weekend. Winds were terrible. We were hunting in Doss. One deer brought in Saturday morning and very few seen.
2 land owners didn’t show up so that left them scrambling for spots to put hunters. We were put in tree stand overlooking a creek where axis has been seen regularly. Our guy couldn’t find the stand so we just brushed in and sat on the ground. Don’t think it would have made a big difference the way the wind was blowing. Saturday afternoon was pretty much the same. Only 2 brought in and very few seen. We went to different ranch and saw 2 nice young bucks.
To put in perspective how tough it was, they had another hunt in Harper with 48 kids and only four deer killed Saturday morning, 3 being fawns.
Sunday morning was a different story. I think we had 6 deer brought in. We went to the Dittmar Ranch. We saw 15-16 deer total. Saw several nice young bucks, including one really nice 8pt. We were so focused on looking at him that we missed a big spike that was with him until it was too late. About 8:40 5 doe came out. Finally got a shot and Gus let the 22-250 bark. Dropped her where she stood. The Mr buddy heater was the best hunting investment we have ever made!
As always, great hunt put on by the TYHP. Hoping to get drawn on some more this coming season!
