Have You Ever Heard of a Bomb Cyclone???

I had not until today. It looks like we are going to have one.

The true name is Bombogenisis. Bombogenesis is a term that describes a midlatitude cyclone that rapidly intensifies.

A bomb cyclone is simply a storm that intensifies very rapidly. Bomb cyclones form when air near Earth’s surface rises quickly in the atmosphere, triggering a sudden drop in barometric pressure — at least 24 millibars within 24 hours.
As the air rises, wind spirals in at the base of the storm. As long as the air continues to rise at the top of the storm faster than it can be replaced at the bottom, barometric pressure will continue to drop. As with a hurricane, lower air pressure yields a stronger storm.

That low pressure system in the first picture is coming right over us. 50 mph wind gusts and below zero temps are in the forecast.

Wichita Falls, TX area had a storm called a "downburst" in August not sure if that is similar or not. Tore up some buildings pretty bad but the damaged seemed to be very localized to certain areas.

Yup. Lived through one in 2019. Sucked big time but we survived. 85 mph was our top wind gust, we had 60+mph sustained for a couple hours and we ended up with 2 feet of snow. I had a sow that dropped a litter of piglets 12 hours before it hit so I ended up tying a line between the barn and the house so I didn't get lost. Only lost power for about 30 minutes.

We were lucky and didn't have any downed power lines but our neighbors down the way lost power to a broken tree for 7 days. They resorted to having to water their animals with those 5 gallon jugs from the grocery store for 3 days.

Since then I have put a backup generator plug in the house so i have heat, water (we're on a well) and stocked up on firewood.

The snow is at the top of the bridge railing on our county road. The road was snow plowed and open yesterday. Yesterday was the first day the mail lady could make it thru. The pavement gets plowed first. The secondary roads (gravel) have to wait.

I forget the name of the book, but there is an interesting story about some Russian students that got caught up in one back in the day in the Ural Mountains. All died. Crazy storm situation.

Post 10 of your post 5 years ago. And you responded on Post 13.

You just proved your point from back then too!

We were in Colorado Springs for spring break a couple of years ago and experienced one. Never heard of it before but that's what the news kept calling it.

Probably not too bad. The Iowa DOT keeps the pavement cleared. I think the turnout will be good. Trump is killing it here in Iowa. I got about a mile of gravel to the pavement. I will 4 wheel it out to get my vote in if the county snow plow (grader) has not got here by Monday. These farmers and country folks are tired of this liberal crap.

Clearly the “establishment “ has used NOAA to manipulate the weather to prevent Trump voters from voting so Haley or DeSantis can win….

all joking aside… yes I’ve heard of it, but I’m a weather geek. Essentially what we are seeing is the arctic jet stream dropping into the lower 48. The sub-tropical jet which typically flows over the Gulf of Mexico. As the Arctic jet dips it narrows the gap between the two which channels moisture and increases turbulence/lift and intensifies storms.
