    using a galvanized tank fto build a BBQ pit?

    My OK Joe from Academy has seen its best days by a long shot. Time for a new one. I have a galvanized water well pressure tank that is not usable anymore for that purpose. Was thinkin about building a new pit with it.
    I have heard concerns about the galvanizing/zinc being a health hazard but the tank is zinc free on the inside. Would this make a difference? Would it be OK to use as a pit?
    I'll take the advice of the people out there who have an educated opinion As I don't wanna poison anyone who eats my Q.​

    you will need to have the galvanize blasted off of both the inside and outside. this service will likely cost as much as just buying a suitable tank or pipe

      I wouldn't want anything galvanized as a fire pit, definitely not something that I will be cooking food inside of.

          No way. Heat that thing up with a torch and you'll see why. When that zinc starts peeling off it smells like death.

            If you are needing a pipe, I have a couple clean pipe I am willing to sell. One is 24" X approximately 6'06" and the other is a 20" X approximately 5'. Both located in Texas City. PM me if interested.

              Do you know the wall thickness Bob? If he passes, I may be interested if the WT is good.

              locolobo - Galvanizing impregnates/bonds to the steel and you will never get it all out. Even if the steel looks clean, its still there. I wouldn't risk possibility of making someone sick and wasting all that money on meat.

                    The 24" is either 3/8 or 4/8, I am not sure at the moment on the 20", but will get some measurement pics tomorrow.

                          I measured the 6'09" X 24 " today, and it looks like its 1/2" thick. Sorry, I didn't get to measure the thickness of the 20". But I also have a older piece of pipe that is not a clean as the other 2, but still good. It's 23" long, and 18" across, and 1/4 thick.

                            Galvanize/zinc can begin to gas off at about 335 degrees or so. Of course higher temps make the gas off accelerate


                            if you’re not familiar with galvanize poisoning…look it up

                            of course, if you use creosote posts as smoking wood….. you don’t need to worry about galvanize to much.
