I have a few small mesquites getting started on my place. Plan to treat with Remedy and diesel. What is the right time of year to do this?

Remedy/water/dye and surfactant as soon as the leaves start budding out. I’ve done this one but it doesn’t kill as effectively as remedy/diesel later in the year.
When the heat of summer really starts cranking up, 1 part remedy 4 parts diesel, and some blue dye. Spray the bottom 4-6” of the tree trunk all the way around at the base.
Sprayed my place in early august. By the time mid September rolled around, every tree that was 1-2” diameter or less could pretty much be broken off at the ground. The bigger specimens (3-5”) lost all the leaves and appear dead. We’ll see if they have one last uummmpphh of life this spring.

Was told by a rancher friend that you don’t spray until the leaves are fully budded out and have changed from the light green to the dark green. Our lease landowner insisted that we spray the entire plant so to experiment, we alternated rows-one just basal and the next full plants. Next spring, guess what? Basal sprayed plants were done, but the foliage sprayed ones came right back out.

If you spray foliage, September through October as the plant is will carry the poison to its roots with nutrients its trying to store for dormancy.
Less poison in more roots will kill better.
keep in mind, if the mesquite has been cut multiple times, the majority of the plant is underground and you may never have enough foliage to carry a lethal dose. Will have to grub at that point.
