Cleaning out a culvert

Has anyone ever had to clean out their driveway culvert?

Does the tire and chain method really work?

or should I just call the Fire Truck and flush it out?

neighbors culvert is full of dirt, and I’m tired of my drive getting washed out acause of it.

Concrete or galvanized ? How old ?

It’s galvanized, only a couple years old.
I think it’s 12’’, which is way to small.

I doubt the fire department will mess with it unless it is a volunteer fire department, and you make a donation. I use a water trailer with a Honda pump and fire hose. Most rental places have them...

I did what I could with a hoe then shot an arrow with a pull string that I swapped for a rope. It took a couple passes with a 14" jon boat trailer tire. I was afraid of breaking the tire off is why I dug by hand first

I'ma flooded again too, brother. Got a swamp started again cause it's been to wet to mow. I needs a bunch of culverts going under my house. They could serve double as escape routes, if they ain't flooded.

In my area the county installs the culverts so I wonder if you could have them come maintain them.

If your culvert stops up, then there is something causing that. I know, Captain Obvious ! Either it is set too low, or it isn’t draining properly downhill of the culvert, or both. If the ditch is too level, the culvert can stop up if there’s enough loose dirt/debris to wash into it. A corrugated pipe is worse because of the grooves in it. A 12” is obviously harder to unstop because it’s so small, but you might try the chain and tire method. If you have access to a water supply, you might try a piece of pipe connected to the water hose to try and concentrate the stream and begin washing the stoppage out as far as the pipe will reach. Not being there it’s hard to give specifics. Good luck !

Drycreek, you are partially correct.
there is a new development across the road that modified the drainage plan to satisfy the homeowners, causing the runoff to destroy my neighbors property, causing the dirt to fill the ditch and culvert across the road. We have hired a lawyer to handle that.

meantime, the moron put a 12’’ culvert in, it should be a minimum 18’’ … and the county refuses to flush the culvert acause they said it’s too small for the ditch.

I think I will get an Engine, with 1500 gallons and a straight bore nozzle to flush it temporarily.

Yep ! It’s the county fault, the county engineer is a idiot or ours is because any culvert works in Kendall county has to be permitted and approved for flow rates before installation
