Anyone have good quail dogs any more?

I recently realized how much I miss a good quail hunt. I used to walk miles chasing those things thru the hills of Oklahoma. Since I moved down here about 18 yrs ago I haven't found anyone with pointers. Not many birds around Houston unless you go to the bird farms.

I know about 4 public places close by where they will put out birds.(That won't hardly fly)

Any you guys do this regularly? Have a favorite place to go?

My husband’s family kept about four back in the day. Unfortunately, we no longer have a place to keep them nor someone to see to their daily needs. And I’m not having one in the house.

Sure appreciate them when we go hunting, though, and always enjoy watching them work.

I drove almost to Waco and gave away my pointers and setters to a tbher years ago and got a Brittany when the latest boom hit a few year back. …… followed by the bust. I have 1 Brit and the guy I hunted with all the time has 1 pointer left. Mine ain’t seen a wild bird in 4 or so yearw

I used to run E. pointers but have switched over to gsp’s about 8 yrs ago and never looked back. I hunt from ND to Tx- it just depends on bird numbers. This year ND and Iowa have been good to me. Love hunting wild birds with pointing dogs. I dont shoot penned quail( worthless).

I go on a hunt or two every year with friends to Walton Ranch in Millican (near Navasota). Their quail are excellent fliers. They use pointers and generally labs as flushing dogs. It is a good setup with a challenging hunt.

I went up there on a corporate hunt about 10 years ago and had a blast. Part of the reason it was such a blast was that someone else was paying. ;-) Not cheap, but it is a great place.

There was a guy on TBH a few years ago that had dogs and hunted in the Sam Houston NF. Don’t remember his name or screen name but I bought a gun from him

I.would go to Walton Ranch if anyone is interested.

To answer your questions in order, yes my lease partner has a young, professionally trained short hair. Yes I hunt birds fairly regularly. My favorite place to go is on my Kansas lease.

You need birds to make a bird dog and it’s been poor for half a decade. I’m in Arizona right now with my young shorthair trying to make a bird dog with desert quail.

As far as having wild birds, we have a decent number of wild birds on our South Texas place every year but this year, we are covered up!! No telling how many I’ve killed with my pellet gun during down times while deer hunting. We gonna get after em after we’re done deer hunting. Some of our guys have good pointers. One guy has a pair of Visilas. Tell you the truth, I enjoy that more than deer hunting!
