Is he going to be OK

This is a buck we have been watching and planned on shooting next year. Do know if this is a wound that will get infected and kill him or he will heal. Would rather have someone kill him and mount him than lose him like the big mule deer we lost. Your thoughts?

Who knows, it’s a coin toss at best. They are pretty tough animals.

I wouldn’t bet against him. That looks really bad but I don’t see infection and he appears to be eating so he isn’t too awfully sick.

He’ll be fine. By the end of January you won’t hardly be able to tell there was a wound there. Years ago a watched a nice 10 with a hole in his left buttocks you could put a fist in. Over the next 6 weeks it closed up to just a messed up spot of hair.

They are resilient animals for sure. If he ain’t favoring it and it isn’t infected, I’ll bet he’ll make it.
Hope it’s healed up before he starts antlers for 2024. I’ve read that Injuries can affect antler growth the next year.

That looks pretty nasty but I agree with the other posters, he will likely be fine.

That’s the classic 6.5 CM wound. He fine.

If he was on the pass list before then he still should be

I would not argue with you if we had had hunters on the place.

No one can say for sure, but looks like its pretty clean. Agree with others its possible he recovers with no ill effects, its equally possible it gets infected and he's dead in a few weeks.

Gonna pull cards again after Christmas and monitor him if it starts looking worse or he looks drawn down I will have to get someone to come hunt him.
