    Caracara Eats Hawk

This weekend at my lease. I killed a couple of does. I gutted them close to a camera to see what came to eat the guts. When we came back by later in the morning we saw a big Caracara fly up from the bushes. We got closer and looked there were hawk feathers in a pile. We looked some more and found another pile of feathers. Then a spot of blood and then we found this hawk. The Caracara we saw fly up had been eating on this Hawk. We checked the game camera and you see the hawk on the ground the next picture you see the Caracara flying in. I have seen Caracara eat snakes and deer but I have never seen one kill another bird of prey and eat it. That is one tough mean bird.

Only the size of the pond dictates whether you are predator or prey

I'm not a big fan of them, but their numbers and range keeps increasing in Texas.

We used to have issues with them and Black Vultures killing our calves.

They are a type of Falcon and big time scavengers.

That's cool. We need some of those here. We have way too many hawks.

Hawk should have been willing to share

We have had them up here in Smith county for at least 3 years

My guess is a coyote or more likely a bobcat that was in the area eating on the gut pile, caught the hawk , and the caracara finished it up.

not sure. There were coyotes on the camera and but they were gone before the hawk and caracara showed up.

We have them all over down there and a Pair of them around my house in Friendswood.

They are crazy mean and tough. They are predator's and scavengers. When we shoot a deer they will start flying in towards the gun shot. They are the best trackers if you have lost a deer.

if you do some research on them you will find that there is a Idea that these are the birds that are on the Mexican peso.

We have them in fields following tractors preping land eating anything that gets exposed. We never had this many back in the day. I don’t trust them, but the bigger birds are majestic up close. I had one that had a busted wing walking around for at least a year

I had a bunch of them lead me to an unclaimed buck a few years ago. Nice big bullet hole in buck, box blind in site, no one fessing up so they wouldn’t burn a tag I guess.
