I have never ate them. It’s funny me and my middle son were just talking about this last week. A friend of his by Port A swore coots were good to eat and ate them all the time.
If people can make nutria and crow taste good why not coots? I need to try it before I give an opinion.
My dog's too **** uppity to retrieve one. Had a buddy shoot one that I sent my dog after. She grabbed it up, turned, took about two steps and spit it out and stared at it. I figured if it was too nasty for her mouth, it was dang sure too nasty for mine.
Legdog and I were dropped off at a pond by the gin for a “duck hunt” when we were kids. We were told not to shoot the coots. The ducks flew away and we were there so long we waded across the pond and killed quite a few. As punishment we had to eat them. I think my mom stuffed them with apples and I remember enjoying the meal. The punishment was cleaning them
Had deal in high school with a local trapper. He would clean our burlap sacks of ducks and he keep the burlap sacks of pooldeau. Tried some a few times he cooked in a gravy and they were good.
They’re good. Don’t taste any different than any other duck. Most people just have no clue how to properly take care of game meat or had a bad experience from someone who had no idea what they were doing.
I can promise you if you did a blind taste test, breasted and grillled, put it next to mallards, pintails, teal, etc you couldn’t tell the difference.
Coots are aquatic vegetation eaters. Ducks follow coots because they know there are good eats. If you see coots in an area there are good groceries. Wigeons got the nickname robbers because they will pull the grass out of a coots bill when they surface.
Nothing wrong with eating them.
I tried it once, thought it was awful. I was told the fat on the breasts is what caused the bad taste, to completely trim them and then soak the breasts in milk to leach out any blood.
