He's the best player in baseball, but there is more to this deal than that. There are 125MM people in Japan, where the Dodgers are currently selling about 15 jerseys a year. That's gonna change as of today. Ohtani opens up a whole new market for them and is the most popular person in Japan. $70MM a year is crazy money, but you can bet that someone that doesn't know a thing about baseball did a deep dive analysis to ascertain the ROI of this contract.

the dodgers have 200 people running 2000 money making scenarios to make sure the numbers work out... they look at it as a brand builder. say the brand is worth 2b and in 3 years after a WS win worth 4b then they are laughing. whats terrible is CA is gonna take a HUGE chunk of it!!
