Good friend asked his neighbor who owned acreage across from him if he would lease it. He recommended me to him, and I ended up leasing another place from him a year later. He had run the other people off because they were on his land constantly with 4x4`s and taking kids and grandkids' year-round. We only have access from September until the end of deer season and no more. I`m just happy to have a place to hunt and try not to wear out our welcome.

How did you find your hunting property?

I started hunting late in life (mid-20s) and the first couple opportunities I got to go were from people I worked with. No leases, just a "Hey, you wanna come hunting this weekend?"
First real place that I had constant hunting time on was a large property (1,400 ac outside of Leakey) owned by a neighbor's Dad. He and another of my neighbors (both are now really good friends) stopped by my garage asking if I could weld something up for them. That started the work-to-hunt program on that property for about 7 years, as a "friend of the family" type thing, even though it was already leased to hunters from LA. The property was eventually leased out to another set of hunters with the stipulation that there would be no more "friends/family" hunts.
Before my access to Leakey ended, I was invited to my current lease (150 ac outside Comfort) by a co-worker. That was 2005. Price has gone up over the years, but it's still a small "family" of hunters, including my neighbor that helped get out to Leakey. It's 45 minutes from my driveway to the cabin, so I'm doing all I can to keep this one. I typically go above and beyond on how I treat the property and I make sure the owner knows I will never tear it up or mistreat it. I treat it as if it were my own place and never ask for reimbursements on things I buy.
Currently, we are working on access to another 150 ac outside Concan, that is owned by a co-worker of my neighbor/lease-mate.
Every opportunity has basically been word-of-mouth or who you know.
