    Comfort area hunters

I got on a lease SW of Comfort last year specifically because it had axis deer along with whitetail. The axis have completely disappeared this year. Anyone else in this area experiencing the same? I thought this area had a large population, where have they all gone? To my knowledge, no one hunts the property surrounding mine. I’ve put out Chaffhaye, which worked immediately last year, and fresh alfalfa. Still no axis. What gives??

Most likely. Seems like everyone is trapping Kendall county these days. Axis tend to move around a lot though. Some years are better than others.

          Is this fact or hearsay?

            Both
I know guys that make a living from trapping them
and others who are amateur and take a few to stock their ranches

I’ve seen 3-4 traps within a mile of each other just off i10. I can imagine it’s like that everywhere around there. Also with as green as it’s been I’m sure they are eating natural browse.

I understand that they are nomadic, but with supposedly so many in this area, I can’t believe I don’t occasionally see one this year.

My sister in law owns a ranch/venue just outside of Comfort. She had a guy trap the axis because they were tearing up her hay fields which is pretty good income for her. That was a few years ago and you hardly see them anymore. I am surprised they have not bounced back quicker particularly because she has Guadalupe River frontage...

It is probably a combination of things OP, the ones that we have on our lease in Kimble Co tend to come and go unless you keep the protein feeders full!

Axis move around a lot. Even with trapping, they aren't going to get them all. Keep after it. Don't give up a lease in that area based off of one hunting season.
