    Alaska draw deadline Dec. 15

Researching a DIY trip for 2-3 guys for moose or caribou and looking for any advice and even zones worth checking out. Don’t mind paying for an air taxi. I tagged along with a friend and his son in zone 18 for a youth caribou hunt last year and got pretty interested. Greatly appreciate any and all input.

There’s no reason to put in the draw for either of those species unless you are dead set in hunting that specific area. I suggest going through the regs book first to start your research.

I was looking first at a caribou herd in the mountains up behind Cooper landing and another zone above Palmer. I realize there are over the counter tags and we’ve also been looking at some of the haul road hunts as well. I’ve been up there fishing a few times, but am pretty unfamiliar with hunting there other than riding along once. I’ll keep digging. My thought was to apply for some of these lower odds zones and buy over the counter if I’m unsuccessful. Is that a mistake?
      Thanks,
      Matt

If you want to put in for the draws that's all a personal choice. You also have to have a license to apply so there is that cost as well. The thing with draw hunts up here is a little different than the lower 48. Unlike other states where limited entry units usually mean the animal quality is better, up here the draws are mainly for easy access areas close to town to keep species herds from being decimated completely. A prime example, the caribou herd you referred to above.

Thanks for the clarification, very much appreciated. I’ll put some time in this weekend and read through the regs some more and keep digging.
