    Protein Feeder Question

I want to add a protein feeder or two, but would like to hear from some of you as to which feeder you think works best. A tray type Lamco feeder or a tube type Hammer dispenser? Does it make any difference for deer in getting used to either one? Thanks.

I have 3 of the krivoman with hammers. For my use, it is the only way to go.

I’ve got one of the all seasons timed 2k feeders. Haven’t had any issue with it and would buy another if needed.

I am familiar with the Krivoman tube style, are the all season tray types? Any issues with wet weather?

Hammer is the way to go so deer will show up when you want them to and won’t eat all night.

You need another one? I have one way in the back corner of my ranch that I need to get out (will be a PIA) and sell to someone. Just been procrastinating doing it for a long time.

I just ordered 6 of the Texas Hunter 1200 pound protein feeders, they are heavy duty synthetic, we have some on another place, really good feeders. Just my opinion but if the deer do not have free choice i do not see protein helping with anything except for an attractant. I have a couple of the Lamco timed ptotein feeders on a place, great feeders except when it rains, had to scoop out a mess more than once.

We put up 2 feeders with the hammer system and really like it. Feed pretty much free choice spring and summer and opening for 10 minutes in the morning and evening now during season.

Just my opinion. There are positives to both. If you have deep pockets and can afford to keep them filled 24-7 via paying somebody or making a lot of monthly or bi-weekly trips then sure free choice does more for a deer. But to say timed protein doesn't help with anything is just regurgitated old school thinking. Some kind of supplement feeding that is consistent will always help compared to nothing. Its just common sense. As much as 24-7 free choice no, but nothing? No as well. I see videos of nice ranches using timed protein feeders and growing very nice deer. Home they are consistently easy to keep feed end with some semblance of control and are putting out feed. Forum They don't run out in week two or three like some free choice 800-1200lb feeders and you can't get back until week 4 or 5 sitting empty for those 2-3 weeks.. Blogs and very importantly, they get deer on your time if they want their part. There a prominent ranch down south that FND hunts with and their manager says there is nothing better at getting mature deer out in the day time than a timed protein feeder. So ....not only do you help supplement the deer in the offseason and up your game some there. You also up your game around your feedpen during season ... For us on a budget it's a win-win and we've been killing some pretty solid deer the past few years for us since most of us got with the timed protein program helping supplement mother nature... I think I'm on year 6 and 6 of our 7 members are doing the same

Most of us would consider ya'll to not be on a budget. Then there's the definition of a budget.

Im on my second year of protein. It's definitely a game changer. I've been using the 1k lb All Season with 4 chutes. No issues with wet feed and coons can't get to it. Been leaving it as free choice which is obviously best, but during the early summer it goes very very quick lol. I'm considering putting a timer in it to get on a 3 month schedule. The deer have benefited since feeding it but best of all it attracts and holds deer on the property. We started seeing bucks we've never seen before. Granted they don't all hang around once the rut starts but they'll come through checking for doe.

I’m a Lamco timed protein owner. I used to be free choice. But raised more than my fair share of Boone and Crocket coons with that program. Since switching to the Lamco, I no longer feed coons. I also feed Cottonseed on a free choice basis.

True true. …. My definition of budget in this instance is a non-free choice controlled feed budget
