Adding the weight to the arrow was the ticket. Our deer are much larger in body size on our new place and I moved to a 12.0 GPI with 65 grain insert for the additional KE and it has performed flawlessly so far. Kudos to you for staying at it and not letting it shake your confidence too bad. Most folks would've gave up on the bow and grabbed a boom stick.

Great write-up!
I had this exact thing happen to me down in South tx about 15 years ago. I was shooting a 400gn arrow with a 3 blade Rage not long after they came out, pulling like 64lb. After that happened, I turned the limb bolts to 70, total arrow weight is about 550, and went to Slick Tricks. I've passed through every single animal since then. I'm probably going to start using a 2 blade expandable since I know the power for it is there.
Again, great story and congrats on an awesome buck and a lesson learned!
