The last thread was getting so large it was hard to keep up so here is a quick followup. I was asked why I would post such a thread. I said I like good discussion and maybe we could all learn a little from it. That was true but more than anything I want to see how far rural culture had changed. Here is how the conversation would have gone 50 years ago...at least around here.....if you were running your dogs and came across the land owner....
What you boys doing?
Trying to catch a hog.
Having any luck?
Not yet sir.
Well I saw some rooting back across the creek the other day. Don't know if they are still there.
Thanks.
Hey boys if you catch an extra sow under 100 pounds I could sure use her.
No problem and thanks again.
That would have been the end of it. If I had posted a thread about folks from California moving here and trying to change stuff the thread would have been filled with comments like " yep they are leaving that crappy place and then now they are trying to change Texas to be just like the place they left". Well folks that in some ways is what is happening in the rural areas of the state. People are moving from the big unfriendly city and then turning the little rural community they move to into the same place they left. That was more my point and I knew running dogs was a sure fired way to see. While most people were nice and simply stated their opinions some were a little more on the hateful side and that is fine. I expected it. I also liked how some liked to cherry pick stuff and the make assumptions to prove their point. I said the dogs stayed were they were supposed too 95% of the time. Did I say the the other 5% we were not able to find the owners and get permission? No I did not but that was sure the assumption many made. We can almost always get permission. The last time we could not was several years ago. It was a place about 40 miles west of me. At the exact time the hunt kind of turned into a cluster. It was a big hog that was a runner. Long story short we had no clue who owned the place. We did catch the hog. After things settled down we were able to find who owned the place. I went to his house and he had one of those ring doorbells. Anyway I explained to him what happened and his reply was "Oh you boys were hurting anything" I told him thanks. He made it clear that as long as the dogs did not chase cattle or deer he did not care but her would not give permission for liability reasons. I could have made that clear to begin with but I really wanted to see what kind of reactions I would get. It was pretty good at the first and did turn a little south at the end but all in all I do not think it was too bad. I am sure this will ruffle some feathers as well but not really my intent. I just wanted everyone to think about stuff a little before making assumptions and jumping to conclusions. I find it interesting that when people do these things they always assume the worse. Anyway y'all get your pitchforks out and light your torches. I am sure I will enjoy reading the responses but will not be responding.
Thanks for playing along.
