I solo hunted an easy to draw unit in Colorado in early September. I was on a small piece of private and was finding deer but it was crowded with people. I had been finding deer and had a couple blown stalks but nothing had been coming together.
on the 3rd morning I was sitting on a hill top so I could get service and do my payroll. I was on the phone with my wife and glassing all the same time!. I saw a buck and told her I had to go.
I took off to get closer and make my way to him before he bedded. I got there just in time to watch him bed down. Just as I did the wind switched and a cold front blew in which put my wind in the wrong direction. I made a plan to circle around and set up above him.
i ended up sitting 40 yards above him for 8 hours just for him ti stand and walk straight away from me offering no shot. I watched him go to the other hillside and bed again.
I made my move again and was able to get to 22 yards then other hunters pulled up behind me and was talking loud. The buck took off after I was working on him for 10 hours. To say I felt defeated was an understatement.
The next day after a slow morning I went over and checked the bucks bed from the day before and it was empty. Then I made my way to the opposite ridge so I could glass the backside of this one and there he was.
I made a plan to drop down on him and sit him out again. This time he cooperated better. He stood quickly and was feeding through the oak brush. I mirrored him and kept him in range. Then he stepped into a gap and stood still letting me kill him at 33 yards. He crashed working sight!!
This was a great hunt and I had some awesome moments on those mountain tops. Seeing the super moon rise that night was an incredible sight.
Mule deer are my number one animal right now that I love chasing.
