I have no affiliation with this group other than I hunt Lake Whitney. I have seen very nice deer in the Cedron campground. Contact is (no relation to myself)- Tanner Lambert tanner.lambert2023@gmail.com
A special white tailed deer hunt for mobility disabled individuals will be held at Whitney Lake in McCown Park and Cedron Creek Parks, December 2-3, 2023. The hunts’ primary objective is deer population reduction in and around the parks and to offer opportunities to hunters that cannot hunt in Wildlife Management Areas due to mobility disabilities.
o qualify for this hunt the individual must “have mobility problems that substantially impair the person's ability to ambulate”. A mobility impairment is a disability that affects movement ranging from gross motor skills, such as walking, to fine motor movement, involving manipulation of objects by hand. This definition from the regulation set forth by the State of Texas to secure a permanent handicapped placard or license plate.
This is an archery and shotgun only event, any archery weapon legal for hunting in the State of Texas may be used. All hunting weapons will be provided by the individual hunter and a proficiency and safety test will be conducted prior to the hunter being allowed to participate. Acceptable shotguns include 12 gauge and smaller firing a single projectile “slug” only. Buckshot or birdshot is not authorized for use during this event. The proficiency test will take place during orientation the evening of 1 December 2023 and will require the hunter to demonstrate the following: 1. The hunter must demonstrate familiarity with the safety features of their individual weapon. 2. The hunter may also be required to demonstrate that they can accurately fire their weapon and engage a 9 inch target set at a distance of 20 yards (required of archery equipment). 3. The hunter will explain their plan for safely charging/discharging and loading/unloading their weapon.
There will be a consolidation point at McCown Valley Park where all harvested animals will be brought to be dressed and quartered. This location will also serve for coordination between individual hunts and the pre-hunt orientation on 1 December. Hunt times will be as follows: Saturday 2 December – Morning Hunt 6:30 am to 9:00 am Evening Hunt 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm Sunday 3 December – Morning Hunt 6:30 am to 9:00 am Hunters will arrive at the front entrance of the park where they are hunting no later than 6:00 am and will then be escorted to their blind by Park Rangers. Any Participant that needs assistance while hunting will need to bring someone for that support. All weapons will be unloaded while in transport to and from the blinds. Hunters are required to stay in their assigned blinds throughout the duration of each hunt. Hunters are not permitted to track wounded animals during hunt hours. Any wounded animals will be tracked after hunting is over and all weapons have been secured. Park Rangers will assist in the tracking of wounded game.
Hunters must have a valid Texas Hunting License and follow all regulations set forth by the State of Texas. Both parks selected for this hunt have antler restrictions and harvest limits in place. All participants will have access to free camping at McCown Valley Park. Participants are also free to find lodging elsewhere in the area if they choose. Participants should plan on providing their own food, but there may be some meals provided.
The hunt sites will be baited with corn before each morning and evening hunt and prior to the hunt. In the past patterning deer to the hunting sites has been successful and participants should expect ample opportunity during this hunt. This hunt is not ADA compliant in its set up, but a reasonable attempt will be made to make the individual blind location and the roads to them accessible to persons with physical disabilities. Participants will furnish all their own transportation during this event. If you are interested in this opportunity, please submit the following application to: Tanner Lambert tanner.lambert2023@gmail.com
