Why do ranchers grow fescue despite its toxicity?

The smaller pasture of my new property is mostly fescue. I had heard it is toxic, and recent research indicates it is true. Brings in a host of problems in cattle and horses the least of which is low weight gain, all the way up to death.

So why is it so common in pastures?

I’ve not heard of fescue but, based on your post, plan to look into it. We don’t propagate it, of course, but I have no idea if it grows on its own or not.

    interesting question.

Depending on what part of the state you are in, it is likely a naturally occurring forage, not something that is planted. As long as it is grazed in fall/winter months and is not allowed to grow tall to a seed head while it is being grazed it is actually a decent winter forage for bovines.
not a good idea to summer cows on fescue however.
should be shredded if it gets close to seeding out.
