Ive been thinking lately about becoming a baseball coach for high school teams. I was just wondering if I have to have any sort of degree to do it? Any help would be appreciated. I'm 21 and have been coaching little league for, four years now. I would like to take it to the next level.

Both of my brothers-in-law (which you've met via Cat Facts) are or have been coaches. If it's your passion, then go for it. It won't be all roses though. Be prepared for the downside of coaching:
- parents mad at you and accusing you of all kinds of ridiculous things on a regular basis
- LONG hours
- short pay
- teaching other subjects, preparing lesson plans, grading papers, etc....
- more parents mad at you and accusing you of all kinds of ridiculous things on a regular basis
- having to work a lot during hunting season
- picking up and moving fairly often
If you love kids and love coaching and have a REALLY THICK skin (and don't need a big salary to live on), then get after it. Good coaches are real blessings in kids' lives. God bless coaches and teachers that are doing it because they love to make a difference in a kid's life.

A degree is a plus and easier to get jobs...
You will have to Teach something. I would go for P.E. if I were you, or Some sort of technology class... ie computers. Stay away from the classes that have a state assessment, its such a pain that it makes teaching NOT FUN.
My major is History and Minor is Education... this is all I can do! If I had it all over to do I would be a P.E. Teacher and then Coach.... Im certified 4-12 Social Studies Composite. Where ever I go Im going to be teaching History.... Sometimes great sometimes not.
If you get certified in something else, like Math then you are stuck with it and everywhere you go will want you to teach Math, just a heads up.
Oh and Pack Lightly... your gonna be moving more than the average joe!

Get an education degree or get certified to teach through Region 12. Get any job you can get, and then work your way to being a baseball coach. At first, you'll have to be a teacher and a general coach. After a few years, you can specialize. Better love long hours with minimal stipends! If you love baseball, and you love kids, that won't matter. I have a passion for baseball just like I do for hunting. Good luck man!

I think it depends on the district. If you are an employee of the district you can coach in ones I know.
I would start by coaching select travel teams most of those coaches get 10,000 plus expenses a season. This will also give you high level of experience you are not gettting in LL.
Good luck!

You don't need a degree in education. You need a degree and must go through education certification either through your institution or an alternative certification process. Getting a job with just PE is very difficult to do these days. I would strongly suggest you have another teaching field. I had to let one of my best coaches go because all he had was PE and we no longer had a spot for him. Coaching is a great and noble profession. It definitely has its ups and downs, but I get paid to play kids' games all day, so I can't complain. Good luck.
You can also go the private school route.Last edited by Coach; 01-27-2012, 01:55 PM.
