Are Prepaid Phones Still a Thing?

There will be times in the near future when I will be leaving my son at camp by himself for a few hours. He's old enough and mature enough to be on his own but not old enough for me to get him a phone in my opinion. I would like to get a burner phone with very limited call and text for emergencies but my internet search is coming up short. To save me a trip to Walmart, does anyone do something similar?

When I first read this, I thought this was a RiverRat post.......

    From Walmart's page.

Yes Walmart, Dollar General, and a few other places sell them.

me I think you can even get them from a Verizon or AT&T store, but they will be trying to sell you a $1,500

I guess they are sold out in your area. The ones by me have them.

Update: Boost mobile $25 bucks prepaid sim card unlimited calling and text for 3 months. Should slide right in to one of my old phones. I'll probably do this every deer season from here on out.

Verizon service doesn't work well at our place but ATT did. Before our company switched from Verizon to ATT I had what ATT called a go phone. they offered flip phones and cheap smart phones-I think I had a $50 smart phone with no data plan. When I was connected to my home network I could load apps to use at camp. I prepaid the account with 25 or bucks and was charged 3 bucks only on the days it was used.

Was about to suggest that. Glad you found the solution.

Perfect for your use and burner phones...

They’re not sold out they have plenty in stock they just have signs posted over them saying they can’t sell them. Weirdest thing I ever saw.

I went to WalMart a couple of months ago to get one for my son. The deal is that you have to buy the phone- flip phone was $100-ish. Then you have to load it with minutes for $x (as much as you want). If you dont use the minutes in 30 days, the unused ones expire and you have to load it with more $/mins. I opted to just buy a $100 flip phone and ad a line to my account for $10 per month....less hassle.

Sure drug dealers use them all the time.
