What a great way to get the season kicked off! Yesterday evening, I was fortunate enough to arrow a big 9pt that we have a lot of history with. Conditions have been less than ideal for sure. Full moon, hot and acorns everywhere. The afternoon sit was slow. I had 2 young bucks come in but nothing else. It was getting late with about 15 minutes of shooting light left. It was right about then that one of the bucks looked up as if something was coming in. I could hear doves flush up and I knew something had to be coming in. Then I could hear hooves walking. Leaning forward ever so slightly to see what it was, I caught a glimpse of a buck. It was my target buck at 15 yards! My heart was beating out of my chest almost uncontrollably. Knowing that light would be fading quick, I hooked my release on the loop knot. He walked around to the back side of the feeder pen. All I needed him to do was jump in. I controlled my breathing and got ready for the shot. He then did the unexpected…. He walked around to the front of the pen (Between me and the elevated Krivo). He was at 5 yards! He then jumped in the pen…..I drew back. He went right to one of the feeder spots, giving me a perfect quartering away shot. I settled the pin and let the arrow fly. Shot looked good. I was able to video with my phone after the shot. He ran about 20 yds and stood in the brush. He made one last run/trot before he went out of my sight. I backed out and went to camp. We watched the video and at a closer look I knew that I had a dead deer! One of the coolest things about the story is my cousin got to take his dog on her first blood track. She went right to the deer! The rest is history.
