    Mines Road 1472 Tick Restrictions

We are hunting off of Mines road near Laredo. We have just been notified that we are under tick restrictions. Have any of you hunting this area been similarly notified or have already been under these restrictions?

    If so I have questions.

How were you notified and how big is the area under restriction? We’re near the Callahan Ranch and havent heard anything, but it’s about 30 miles from your area.

Our lease manager was notified by the ranch. We only have 2200 acres but the ranch owns thousands more.

What is a tick restriction? Do they have to be 8mm or bigger to pull them off? Outside leg spread > 10mm?

I hunted a place that has 40,000 acres on one side of mines road and a few thousand acres on the other side along the river. The main part, they can do what ever they want, the other side of the road is a bunch of crap. They cant even move a cow from that side to the main ranch....that caliche road must have magic powers to keep ticks and deer from crossing it.

We hunt off Mines and haven’t heard anything yet but I’ve also never heard of tick restrictions. One thing I do know is that in the short time I’ve been hunting there I haven’t had one tick on myself or my family. I used to get one or more every trip in the hill country, especially Menard.

Yeah it’s amazing, we have to skin and freeze or dip south of 183 over east of 16 , but
we never have had to do the tick thing on the north side of mines

I’ve heard of the freezing the hide. It baffles me because I’ve watched documentaries on Eskimos. They pick and eat ticks off of each other because thawed ticks come back to life.

We've dealt with cattle and hunting on Mines Rd. since my dad was in high school in the 60's. We still hunt on the same property but don't run any cattle. It can change from year to year on what they demand. Did your property have cattle on it? Did they find a fever tick and now the cattle and property are quarantined? That's usually the case when they start making the hunter's freeze hides and what not. Before the freezing thing, they would require us to call a tick inspector and have them spray insecticide on our deer heads and hide. He'd also inspect them for ticks. That's been several years ago though and might have been because the cattle got quarantined.

When we worked cattle they would spray the horses and dogs down too. The cattle went through a dipping vat. It's such a pain to deal with that my dad finally just pulled his cattle off. You can go through several years of no fever ticks, but when they find one, that's when it becomes a pain. You then have to find a place to take your cattle for several months (or sell them) while the pasture is quarantined. As most of you know, finding a cattle lease isn't that easy.

Ok I called our tick rep yesterday at 12:30. This is the first I’ve ever had to deal with this and the only info I got from the ranch is a phone number.

He had both his phones diverted to the main office. The secretary said he was at lunch to try after 1 pm.

I just phoned back. 2:45 pm Both phones are diverted to the main office. Secretary says he is gone for the day. She can take a message.

He SHOULD be able to be contacted between 7am and 2 pm tomorrow.

So if I kill a deer in the evening and want to go home I’ll be playing phone tag with this joker.

This is what I was afraid of.

I again phoned the tick expert this am. Yesterday they told me to call between 7-2 today.

                    He is out until Monday.

                    Cannot be reached this weekend.

                    Bow season starts tomorrow.

I have been under this for years now. They came and hung signs on all the gates saying that if you kill a deer and want to take the cape home you have to call and have them come out and inspect it. There were 2 guys for all of Zapata County. I called once years ago and TBH never called again. If you are in an area its a ranch owners pain in the butt. These guys come out whenever they want and make them round up the cattle. They do a scratch test to see if they "have the fever" if not then you turn them loss and see you in a few months.

you can have one rancher that has had one cow get the fever and have this for miles around you. Its a freaking joke

                        Welcome to government control

You calling those guys shows why the gov does not work, why programs never go away, and why all their projects go so far over budget.

I wouldnt worry at all if i was you and killed a deer this weekend. For starters, that deer could naturally cross the county road and go to houston if it wanted to, just because you killed it does not make it "more dangerous" or a "tick threat". Funny they are more worried about a dead deer than the 10,000 illegals crossing every day.

I have literally never heard of this and can't believe it's even a thing. Seems to me that when a deer is killed the ticks tend to release on their own and move on......surprised they don't just notify the deer to not travel, this would immediately go into my ignore column
