    Closet door help

We have an older home the closet doors are 46 7/8" by 81" rough opening. I don't see anything close to these measurements on the Lowes, or Home depot web site. So how do I go about getting new doors, other than buying smaller and trimming the sides out ?

I was thinking about bi fold doors, but would sliding doors be better ?

Is this a true rough opening with no trim.

That is correct, true rough opening.

I guess a couple of 2' sliding doors are your cheapest, easiest option. If you could find a 3'-6" door that would work but your jamb trim would be kinda wide.

You can go with a 3668 single door, but it will be pretty wide. You could also go with a 3668 pop door. If you have the wall space to slide the door you can trim out the rough opening and hang a barn door.

Swing through your local lumberyard and share your rough opening with them. They will be able to give you your options. The majority of the time the big box stores are worthless unless you know exactly what you need.

I get mine done at a lumber yard that makes their own doors & frames. Fit any size. Higgenbothem does it too.

You're not going to find an interior standard, single door unit wider than 36".

I don't know what was in there, your rough opening is odd. If you could cut the header up to 82-1/2"ish, then you could furr in the opening to accept a TWIN 3'4"x6'8" (pair of 1'8" doors),which would need a 42-1/2"x82-1/2" RO, or you could order a TWIN 3'4" cut down to match you RO height. Either way, you'll have to get the lumberyard to order them, nobody will have those sizes on the shelf.

Put a barn door on it. Make it out of 1x4s
                    Sliding thing with overhead/exposed rail.

                    Everybody else does.

48x80 is a pretty common size for bifold doors. you might just have to rip off the outer edges.

you can also buy individual door slabs, like say 12", trim them down and buy the bifold hardware. More work this way but this is how you could get perfect gaps on bifold doors.
