Acorn Crop in East Texas Fall 2023

What does the acorn Crop look like in your area? Here in Cherokee county where I live, the Oaks in my yard are barren this year. Last year they were raining acorns. On my Hunting Property in Anderson County, I have no idea what the acorn crop looks like. I have heard that some variety of Oaks have acorns, and some do not. But I do know that the deer are hammering my Corn and Protein Feeders right now. So either the acorns have yet to fall or the crop is poor this year. What do the Experts on TBH think?

Can't speak for east Texas, but I would like to know how they are dropping in Houston County! Here in central TX my trees are dropping a much smaller amount than last year.

There’s not much at home near Woodville. I still haven’t walked our Newton County property much to notice. It was really dry this year so I assume that helped deter the acorn crop in many places.

Our trees are way to tall to tell. Now my brother has 2 oaks in his yard and he said they are loaded. That’s in Panola county. Here at my house in Robertson county, acorns are already dropping, but they are about half the size they should be. And they seem to be good cause the squirrels are cutting them up.

Bumper crop here in Waller county. Amazing how they can make so many with so little rain.

Haven’t checked the white oaks yet, but good amount on several species of red oak in central Cherokee Co.

We are right on the Houston/Anderson County line and the acorn crop is extremely light where we are.

I checked my white and pin oak trees in Freestone county and some trees are loaded but what acorns are present are barely out of the husk. My Sawtooths and live oak acorns are barren this year.

Grimes county- Trees are loaded with very small acorns, mostly caps.

tree in my front yard in Brazos counting is loaded with fat acorns- albeit I soak it with water all summer.

I have a water oak in my front yard that usually is loaded. This year the acorns are really small, and not many of them. I haven’t walked through the woods, but what trees I’ve observed just checking my cameras and what not, I haven’t seen any acorns on the white oaks or red oaks. I think it’s gonna be a good year for corn in Cherokee and Rusk Counties. BTW, my sprinklers ran five days a week this summer, but I’ve read that an acorn crop is dependent on the moisture the trees got the fall before. Don’t know if that’s true or not.

At my lease in Woodsboro the deer were eating 125lbs of feed a day at my two different stands, all of a sudden it just almost completely stopped, probably at 25lbs a day now. Either the rain greened things up a little or the acorns are hitting the ground.

I did a little google fu just now, and from the scientific articles I read, my considered opinion is you either have acorns or you don’t, and evidently the scientists don’t really have a good handle on it except for the fact that rainfall and temps do have an effect on acorn production. You are welcome !

I have three large live oaks in Tomball area. Only one is dropping acorns right now, can't hardly go out on my back deck because of them. It hasn't dropped like this in 4 years.
