    Older eyes

The one thing that I dislike about getting older is my eyes changing. I have always enjoyed shooting handguns but now days I can't see the sights, they are just a blur. I'm planning a trip to the eye doctor soon, to get new glasses. But it's more than than handguns, I can't see the sight on my open sighted rifles. I can't be the only shooter with this issue, so what have you done to overcome this issue ?

I got Lasix about 10 years ago. Best thing I ever did, but I'm having cataract surgery next year. Who knows what my vision will be after that.

I have been thinking about the lasix, but I don't know if I'm a candidate yet. That is definitely an option I'm thinking about. My wife had both lenses replaced do to cataracts, she ended up with 20/20 vision in both eyes.

As far as handguns, getting a red dot sight is a game changer.

I keep reading glasses everywhere. I have macular degeneration, the Dr suggested that I start taking Ared vitamins. I believe the vitamins have actually helped my vision.

Yep. Reflex, Red Dot and scopes from here on out. If you're just starting this journey I found that just wearing a cheap pair of 1.25 cheaters will gain you a few more years. I wear mine all the time and 2.5 cheaters to read with.

I went to Berkeley Eye Center to get Lasik, I am to old (over 55), instead Lensectomy was recommended. Dump the glasses as quick as possible.

It is frustrating......I haven't been able to see handguns sights well for a few years now and it is getting worse. Big & bright front-sights help but any kind of precision shooting without an optic or reading-glasses is out of the question.

Aperture sights work well for rifles if paired with a bright front-sight.

I have mounted red-dot sights on a couple of my handguns and one of my carry guns. They work but I'm still not 100% convinced on a carry gun.

The problem is my true love is big bore, Smith & Wesson revolvers. When held at arms length the sights are a blur. My next project is put a Shield sms on my daily carry. I bought the Hellcat specifically for this purpose. I hate to sell the Smith's I have owned some of them for forty years.

I had the same issue, my problem was very aggressive cataracts. When I finally went in I was 20/200 in my right and 20/100 in my left..... I could still see just no detail and anything over 75-100 yards and smaller than a cow had to be moving for me to see it. Went in had the lens replacement done and now my right eye is 20/20 left eye is 20/30 and together I can pick out a few of the letters on the 20/15 line. The only time I use very weak cheaters now is reading very small print.......think the back of a aspirin bottle. If it is Cataracts, look in to the light adjustable lenses. They are expensive, but they can be adjusted to get you near perfect vision. The other types are good, just know going in you will probably still have to use cheaters for reading regular print or computer work.

I went to tri-focals around 10 years ago, after having cataract removed from left eye. Putting a dab of bright orange on front site of my pistols helps. A trick from my military days.

I got my first glasses a couple years ago. The thing I hat most is it seems that the glasses just make things worse, as every year I have to get a new, stronger prescription.

I wear progressive lenses and gave up on iron sights on rifles a couple years ago. Even my leverguns now have scopes and I put a red dot on my turkey shotgun. When shooting handguns I have to awkwardly tilt my head back a bit to look through the part of the lens that will bring the front sight into focus.

I haven't been able to see iron sights for years. The other day I was shooting my bow and saw some hogs meandering around about a hundred yards away. I snuck into the house and got my .223 with a fixed power 3X or 4X scope. I quietly got into position for a shot and then couldn't see well enough through the scope to take the shot. That is even with new lens implants and prescription glasses.

My cataracts got bad enough for the lens change.
