    Stocker Fish For A Tank

Anybody have any info on what stocker fish cost to put into a stock tank? Bass, perch, catfish, etc?

Check out ""Stock My Pond". I've had good luck with them in the past.

Where are you located? I used Blessed Bayou from the Anahuac area (between Houston & Bmt). They are tremendous people to deal with. They will guide you with a stocking plan and not try to sell you just quantities of fish for the sake of i9ncreasing their revenue. Call and talk to Darcie.

sounds like you're more interested in what to stock, rather than where to get it? A lot of it is dependent on pond size. If you have a small pond, under an acre, I'd recommend a catfish/bluegill mix, with forage fish thrown in. I've got bass in my quarter acre pond, and they eat everything, and none of them get very big. I thought I'd cleared a whole lot of them out until TVC and his buddy came over with fly rods and caught over 20 in 30 minutes on flies. You never get them all out, and few if any ever get particularly big unless you constantly restock forage for them. On the other hand, with fish food you can accommodate several hundred panfish and catfish each in a fairly small pond. Do NOT stock crappie unless your pond is close to 10 acres or bigger.

I've searched for years for a local hatchery. Will have to check them out!

What’s your goal? That’s the first step. Understand that to do a bass pond right is a year of stocking before putting bass in. You need a good forage base of minnows, shiners, and blue gills before putting the big predator fish in.

A couple of 40lb flatheads in there will help keep the green trash fish and ditch pickles out.

A fella put a dozen blue cats in his tank to get rid of the crappie, it worked.

OP, you aint never did say where you live. I use Herrmann's Fish Farm out of Robstown.

I read somewhere that it takes 11 pounds of bait fish to put 1 pound on a largemouth. Also said not to put bass or crappie in a pond less than 1 acre in size(208'X208') So, unless your pond is rather large and you have a lot of baitfish, stay away from Bass and crappie.

Thanks for the info folks! The property is between Olney and Wichita Falls. The landowner is a friend of mine and has just recently purchased the land. He's from up north and knows nothing about hunting/fishing and has asked for my help. Most things will be pretty easy to teach him, but I have never had the task of stocking a tank, so we will both be learning. Some of my friends have made the comments on it being easy, just catch fish & transfer them to the tank......but that's a good way to get into trouble in various ways (I know that much at least). I've fished tanks for years growing up as a kid and never really looked as to why I'd see so many Bass, but never anything of any size to brag about.

Just the info shared so far, has shed a lot of light on the subject. The landowner was hoping for a mixture of fish, but it sounds like it'd be a better plan to concentrate on a couple species like maybe catfish and panfish more than Bass. Guess we'll see what he chooses, lol. I was hoping to find some place to buy stockers somewhere between Ft Worth, Stephenville, and Burkburnett......but I'm sure something could be ordered from further away if necessary. I just figured there'd be plenty of wisdom from my brethren on the Greenscreen.

                          Thanks guys!
