    Elk calling

A buddy and I will be heading up to hunt elk for a week in Utah. This will only be my second time hunting elk but really my first time calling. I have practiced a lot and have most of the calls down. However, where I lack experience is the "elk language." In other words, how often to call, when to use what call, and overall just responding to any bulls in the area. Watched a ton of videos but would like some advice from seasoned elk hunters. Thanks!

Elk Nut, aka Paul Madel has an excellent app that you can download and keep on your phone. He is a wealth of information in my opinion.

A good thing to do instead of going to camp during the midday is to get into the dark timber with the wind in your face and cow call periodically while moving quietly like a turtle. Cow call, stop watch and even glass ahead. You might get a bull to raise his head, turn his head or even stand. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But at least you are huntin not just sitting in camp.

Stay out of their bedding areas unless you want them all in the next county.
Try to find some vids of just elk interacting, it is amazing how they talk to each other.

Elk nut app taught me a lot. I called in 4 bulls my first 9 days ever elk hunting. I haven’t practiced much this year on my calling though. So it won’t be as good, doesn’t matter much to me as we double killed 2 bulls last year without no calling.

Just remember nothing in nature sounds perfect. I find the more perfect the bugle the less elk come in. If you have an elk coming in on a bugle be sure to through a cow mew in there to really get them going. If you find a satellite bull sometimes the bugle will scare them off I would suggest using a cow call instead of a bugle.

I've got a buddy working a crew out by Spanish Fork. Beautiful country. He went out to the site yesterday and he said he jumped a herd of pronghorn which he said was pretty neat to see. Also told me he heard an elk bugle. Good luck!

IMO, the part you are missing is the part you learn in the woods. You have to read the elk sounds. The only way to read elk sounds is to call to them. BTW, don't worry about making a "perfect" call. I can bugle/cow call better than 50% of the elk I've run into. Elk are very different, not like white tails.

Remi Warren has a very good podcast series, right now, worth listening to. Best of luck this fall!

Same here. He fills a gap in hunting podcasts, where he talks about actual hunting. And hunting some real cool stuff for sure!

Totally agree. Remi, Rinella, and Brian Barney are the few hunters that aren't trying to get Social media likes or promote some motivational fitness crap and actually give back to the hunting community. It's a joke what some "hunters" do to promote themselves.

Add Steve Chappell, Corey Jacobsen, Chris Roe, Jason Phelps, Joel Turner, and Wayne Carlton to the list of elk callers worth listening to.
