    I found this interesting

I had a new deer show up on camera this past week. He’s pretty cool, got a weird split brow. I’m not really sure how old he is. Here’s what I found interesting:

i sent the pic in a group message to 8 guys I know who are hunters asking how old. The first guy said 3, and in total 6 of the 8 said 3 or 3.5.

i also posted pics on here in the game management/age and score/trail cam pics forum, and the first guy said it was old, 7-8. 6 more people commented, and every single one said he was old.

this had me confused, so I posted it to east Texas outdoors on Facebook. The first guy there said 4.5. Since then about 25 people have responded, and nearly 20 said 4 or 5.

all this leads me to believe that A) people suck at aging deer (myself included), and B ) the first to chime in gets to decide what the group thinks as a whole.

Very difficult to age one this time of year, especially with the heat and drought. He should still show some characteristics of the age class he falls in though.

        I'd definitely say older, 6+.

Don't know what to tell you. He's still 7 or 8 in my eyes.

My opinion, for whatever that’s worth, that deer is definitely north of 3.5.

            I say 6, +/-.

I’m not saying you’re wrong. I just thought the overall lesson in group think was pretty interesting.

I find myself in a similar situation when I post “how old “ pics. I know I’m not good at judging age by trail cam pics (unless they are so old and droopy it’s obvious) but I’ve posted numerous times when our resident experts make compelling arguments for a buck being anywhere from 3 to 6

He isn't very old. At least not old enough to have a pot belly and saggy jowls. Looking at the profile pic, that deer is just coming into his prime. I'm going with just over 4 years old.

Very mature deer. He'll look different in a few weeks when he's not sleek and slim for the summer.

                      A. Grainy quality of pics make it hard to determine

                      B. My eyes are getting old and not having cheaters sux

                      C. He has the general characteristics of a mature deer, but refer back to A

If he came in front of me, you wouldn't need to know next year.

first pic i would say 5, other pics looks older than that. I don't see a 3.5 yr old deer. Ask Dr.Deer on his facebook page
