    Elk bullet

Going in an elk hunt in 2024. Once in a lifetime trip for MyBride and I. Taking a 300 win mag that I typically shoot hornady super performance sst in 180 grain. Is that a good bullet choice or what do you recommend?

They should work fine. Hit em in the boiler room.

Thats bigger and heavier than my dad and I have used to shoot and kill almost a dozen elk from 30-450 yards

It will kill ‘em for sure and I do like the SST bullet but for an elk I would be looking for a bullet that will hold together alittle better. I really like the Barnes ttsx bullets.

It should work. Personally I like a bullet that is known for a little more penetration for elk sized critters and above. My two favorites are TTSX and Accubonds. That being said, I have liked every elk of mine with a bow. Surely your current ammo has more killing ability than an arrow.

That sst is an interlock bullet and will penetrate plenty for an elk.

I shoot the Speer 150 gr. soft point and have had really good results in my 300 win mag.

Shouldn’t have a problem, I have hunted from the equator to the arctic circle using federal classic 180gr
if folks use a ELDX 6.5cm on elk the SST should be 100% better

Thanks for the responses. Did a little research and some are saying that is bad choice. I have several boxes of the sst and my gun likes it. Would buy something different if needed

I personally wouldn't shoot an SST at an elk unless that is all my rifle liked. Great bullet but pretty volatile. I would opt for something like a Accubond, Partition or TTSX for some extra penetration in case a quarter to shot is all you can get

You can kill them with an arrow. I am pretty certain just about any bullet will work well!

                      Where you going hunting?

125 grain Iron Will works awesome!

Yes, any bullet has the potential to kill an elk and everyone loves to brag about their kills with sub optimal bullets. Congrats to you. A .22 can kill an elk too.

For a once in a lifetime hunt, I'd want to make sure you're shooting the best bullet which will increase your likelihood for a clean kill at long distances if needed . For me, the biggest factor would be how well your gun shoots them. I'd certainly be looking for sub 1 MOA groups. Like several others have said, I'd be choosing between the TTSX, Accubond or Partition. Best of the best.

two holes leave more blood than 1, and typically the entrance hole is smaller than the exit..

I’ve never personally liked the SST. Doesn’t hold together as well as I would like for an elk. I would recommend Nosler Accubond or Partition, Barnes TTSX, Swift A-Frame or Scirocco, or something similar.
